ECCO inducted into exporter hall of fame

ECCO is singled out as one of Denmark’s top 30 international business success stories. An effort that began 50 years ago.

ECCO is leaving footprints in 91 markets and now the Danish shoe manufacturer is welcomed into a prestigious Exporters Hall of Fame.

At a ceremony in Copenhagen Wednesday, ECCO was inducted into the “Danish Export Canon”, an initiative by The Ministry of Foreign Affairs that pays tribute to the biggest Danish export successes since 1989.

ECCO was awarded in a category called ”Super Designers” along with LEGO, Republic of Fritz Hansen, Designit and Henning Larsen Architects. In other categories companies such as Carlsberg, Arla Foods, Novo Nordisk, Siemens Wind Power and Maersk Line were honoured.

“We are humble, yet proud to be one of Denmark’s top 30 international business success stories. It’s a courtly recognition of an effort that began 50 years ago. It’s also recognition of the work being done every day by our 19,500 employees around the world,” says Steen Frentz Laursen, Vice President Group Communication, who accepted the award on behalf of ECCO.

The honour was presented by the Minister of Trade, Nick Hækkerup, who in his nominating speech put particular emphasis on ”courage” and ”innovation” as important factors to achieve sustainable success as an exporting company.

Work on this “Danish Export Canon” began in March 2013, when more than 300 Danish companies were nominated. A selection board of experts within the fields of science and business scrutinised the nominees and singled out 30 companies whose history and performance could serve as inspiration for other companies that have not yet gone global.

ECCO was established in 1963. The same year as the company started export to Sweden - an effort that has today grown to 91 different markets around the world with export accounting for 97 per cent of sales.
