Tannery waste has great potential as an energy source. A highly advanced wastewater treatment plant and biogas system became fully operational in 2012 at ECCO’s tannery in the Netherlands. A large percentage of the waste is piped directly into the wastewater plant to be converted into biogas.
The majority of the biogas is used to produce energy to run production processes that previously depended on non-renewable fossil fuels. The remaining biogas is used to heat installations. Starting in 2013, all excess organic material from the hides will be converted into biogas.
The new biogas system is an efficient, sustainable solution, which will greatly reduce the energy needs of our tannery production in the future.
